First Aid & CPR Ontario

In Ontario, retirement homes, long-term care homes and other residential settings for seniors and vulnerable adults rely on direct-care staff who can respond to a medical emergency. To keep residents safe, these settings must have staff trained in first aid and CPR on site.

Under the Retirement Homes Act regulation (O. Reg. 166/11), staff who provide direct care to residents must be trained in first aid and CPR; long-term-care and home-care employers likewise require a valid Standard First Aid with CPR Level C or BLS certificate, able to respond to adults and to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid/CPR certificate is the way to meet this requirement; it is in addition to the worker's occupational (PSW) training and must be renewed periodically.
