In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. For regulated nurses and physicians, keeping resuscitation and first-aid skills current is part of staying competent and is frequently an employer requirement; for support-care roles it is a condition of working with residents. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Nurses in Ontario are regulated by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), which requires every registrant to take part in a mandatory Quality Assurance (QA) program under the Regulated Health Professions Act. Rather than a fixed number of hours, the program asks nurses to self-assess their practice, identify learning needs and carry out a reflective learning plan — documentation that is subject to audit. Physicians are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).

Professional standards require nurses to maintain the knowledge and skills their practice demands and to respond appropriately in an emergency. Clinically relevant training such as Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR can be recorded as part of the learning plan, and in most hospital and long-term-care settings a current BLS or CPR certificate is an employer requirement rather than a condition of the licence itself.

Continuing competence is mandatory but not measured in fixed hours: the CNO Quality Assurance program requires an annual self-assessment and reflective learning plan rather than a set number of credits.

For support staff the requirement is more concrete. Under the Retirement Homes Act regulation (O. Reg. 166/11), staff who provide direct care must be trained in first aid and CPR, and Personal Support Worker (PSW) programs and long-term-care and home-care employers require a valid Standard First Aid with CPR Level C or BLS certificate. This is a recognized standalone certificate held in addition to the PSW qualification — obtained, then renewed on schedule — and it is the credential your workplace verifies.
